Different Faces -Four Seasons in Nagano-

As you may know, Japan is home to four distinct seasons, which we refer to as 春夏秋冬 (Shunka Shuto) – spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each season lasts roughly three months and brings its own unique beauty and charm.

Spring: March to May

As the weather begins to warm, you can enjoy beautiful cherry blossom here in Japan. With over 600 different species, cherry trees vary in shape and bloom time, offering something new to discover each year.

One of the most cherished traditions during this season is Hanami, or cherry blossom viewing. Friends and families gather under the blooming trees to enjoy picnics, music, and the fleeting beauty of the blossoms. In Nagano, there are several famous spots to experience Hanami.

1. Takashima Castle (Suwa City)

Located in the heart of Suwa city, center of Nagano. Takashima Castle wa built over 400 years ago by a vassal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The castle is surrounded by a moat, designed to protect it from and its history is over 400 years. Architects built moat around the castle to protect it from fleet. In spring, cherry petals gently fall onto the water, creating a breath taking scene of pink reflections and historical elegance.

2. Takato Castle Ruins Park

Every April, the Takato Cherry Blossom Festival is held here, attracting visitors from all over the country. The cherry trees are illuminated at night eith vibrant lights, blending natural beauty and artistic lighting. It’s a spectacular display―almost like a living art installation.

Summer: June to August

1. Lake Suwa

The lake in center part of Nagano; Lake Suwa is famous as an anime movie location. Have you ever seen “Your name”. You will be fascinated by the scenery from Tateishi Park as if you were in the movie.

Lake Suwa is the largest lake in Nagano, and this shows us different faces according to season. You can see various figures of the lake every time when you visit Suwa city.

2. Karuizawa

The city is familiar for shoppers. In 2019, about 3.6 million people visit Karuizawa and enjoy shopping experience. However, not only shopping experience is attractive- but also ample nature. Here, you can also enjoy camping in a vast forest and relaxing in hot spring. The fusion of enjoyment and refreshment is most attractive, isn’t it?

Autumn: September-November

You will be enveloped in a forest of vivid crimson leaves if you visit Nagano in fall. You can spend a peaceful time, gently swaying in the autumn breeze.

1. Norikura plateau

In fall, spectacle scene of autumn leaves and Japan Alps is dramatic. In particular, you can enjoy the beautiful trees change their appearance from green to autumn leaves. It is held that Japanese Sake festival in same semester, so it must be exciting experience to fulfil your eyes and throats.

2. Jikokudani wild monkey garden

Why not witness this rare and charming scene with your own eyes?
Japanese macaques have inhabited this area for a long time, and they’ve learned to relax in the natural hot springs. You can enjoy watching their unique behavior, especially against the stunning backdrop of vivid autumn leaves.

Winter: December-February

Nagano offers the quiet luxury of relaxing in a hot spring as snow falls silently, while you reflect on the history and charm of old post towns.

1. Narai (Nakasendo)

If you want to experience traditional Japanese architecture, be sure to visit Narai. This historic post town preserves buildings just as they were in the Edo period, stretching over one kilometer. Take a leisurely walk through cultural heritage sites while enjoying delicious local foods. In winter, the wooden houses blanketed with snow look like something out of a painting—truly breathtaking.

You can also try your hand at making traditional souvenirs here. Narai is famous for several traditional crafts, such as Kiso lacquerware—a time-honored art with over 400 years of history, known for its durable, thick coatings and deep, elegant gloss.

2. Nozawa Hot Spring Ski Resort
